BRAND loyalty is a vanishing force in the beer market, says the man who has put coffee into stout in a limited edition brew set to launch next week.
Southern Bay Brewing Co lead brewer Steve Walker has collaborated with Coffee Cartel’s Nathan Johnston to produce a limited edition drop called Mr BIGS.
“The idea was to do a small release, which allowed us to be able to experiment and be very creative,” Mr Walker said. “Drinkers no longer have such a loyalty to a particular brand.
“They are keen to try something new and we like to keep the creative aspect going and give them interesting things to try."
The stout is made with a Belgian yeast, which adds complexity to the beer and a fruity and caramel flavour.
The Guji coffee from Ethiopia is extracted cold over a 24 hour period, resulting in a more delicate flavour than would be possible if brewed under more volatile conditions such as espresso, Mr Johnston said. The coffee is added to the brew before fermentation and after heat has been applied, ensuring the complexity of the coffee is not lost, he said.
Mr Johnston works directly with the farmers who produce the coffee crop.
“We are the first people to have an office in Ethopia,” he said. “This is an exciting cutting-edge partnership"
